Well it has been a while since I posted, and to be honest, I was having a bit of a break over the holiday season. I hope everyone out there had a relaxing time with family and friends. I certainly did.

This post is a bit of a request from a few people, and one I promised to do when I posted the original. I purchased a Moleskine Messenger Bag a little over 3 months ago (Review here!) and have been taking it to work and using it every day. Here are some photos of how the bag has been holding up.

One thing I have a bit of a gripe with is the way the bag sits. I’m a tall guy, (6’3″, or about 193cm) and have the strap as long as it goes. It sits just below my waist, and I find when I walk, it tends to wander to my side. I’m not sure if it’s because of how I have the strap, or if it’s due to the lack of shoulder pad to keep it in place, but it is mighty annoying.

As for the actual components of the bag, they are not holding up so great. The stitching which holds the strap to the side of the bag (there are two stitched areas per side) has let go on one side, stopping the bag from sitting right, and often making it hard close.

How it should be:

How it is:

There are also some places where the exterior has been rubbing or peeling off. Considering one of the big selling points of this bag was that it “feels like a Moleskine notebook” and is waterproof, I find this worrying.

When I first got the bag I suspected that it would get dirty, and I was right. It’s not as bad as it could be, but general use including newspapers, lunches, umbrellas and my Laptop tend to leave the cream interior a bit darker than it should be.

There are also some places inside the bag which have been wearing through. Now I’m not sure WHY that is happening, but it’s not how a bag should be looking after 3 months.

Finally, the largest disappointment is after about a month, the bag just wasn’t looking as good as it first did. It’s not standing as well, and the base is sticking out a bit through the soft material.

While I was really happy with it when I got it, I am now thinking I should have spent the money on a bag made by a bag company, or something with real leather, which would stand up to the day-to-day punishment a bit better.

If you love Moleskine, and only intend to use it now and then, it could work, but if you are looking for a day-to-day work bag, for this price I would look elsewhere.

P.s. I have bought a new camera, and am trying some new ways of giving you pictures in full resolution, rather than Flickr’s cut down version. I’d love to hear your feedback.

Love your review, I’m still considering getting this bag because I love the way it looks, however, your review has deterred me quite a bit. Do you have any suggestions for another similar bag that I should get?

      Thanks for the compliment :)

To be honest, I haven’t tried any other bags which I have really liked, however I have had my eye on this one from Levenger. It’s a bit more expensive, but it looks a lot more utilitarian than the Moleskine one. Also, it’s made from real leather. Big plus!

Dammit! I was hoping you’d convince me to spend the money on it. Now you sort of talked me out of it. Any possibility that you were drunk when you did your follow up review? : )

Sorry to be a bummer, but I was rather disapointed. It just didn’t live up to the pricetag at all.

If you can find something similar at a bag shop for $40, it will probably last twice as long, if not longer!

Doh! I was also hoping to pull the trigger :(

Wow, thank you SO MUCH for this detailed review, both new and a few months in. I was in love with the pretty pictures on the Moleskine site and ready to buy it – quality unknown. I really appreciate you saving me the annoyance of a bag that won’t stand up to my daily use.

Thanks so much for the review! I love how you do a review after using the bag for 3 months! I almost bought it online and I am glad that I didn’t. Since it doesn’t look like it would hold up too well, I am going to be researching for an alternative.

Hi have been reading the reviews on this bag – I love Moleskine stationery and have looked at this bag. However I decided to go for the Kipling New Arne Workbag which is quite a bit cheaper. I would thorough recommend it – the quality of Kipling is amazing and it never gets that worn look.
    Check it out.

    • Tara,Thank you for your video. You are so right, we are always questioning if we deserve things. So to answer your question: What do I deserve? I deserve the best that life can offer, a life of comfort, a stable and joyous relationship with my partner and kids, and an awesome job where I can perform to the best of my abilities.Gracias!!
